Technology

We care about our patients and do our utmost to provide the services that help keep them safe, healthy and comfortable, and provide the restorations that are extremely durable. The advanced technology that we employ in our office allows us to do just that.

Please click on the links below to read further information about the technology used in our dental office.

Digital X-ray

Digital x-rays not only expose our patients and staff to 90% less radiation then typical x-rays, they are also more sensitive then traditional dental x-rays. Digital x-rays allow us to clearly see the entire tooth and root structure as well as surrounding bone and tissue. They give us the opportunity to detect and diagnosis issues before they are visible to the naked eye, and before they can cause significant damage and pain.

To obtain an x-ray a small sensor that is connected by a line wire connected to a computer is placed in the mouth. A beam is then sent through your teeth to the sensor that records the images. The doctors and staff can immediately pull up the digital x-rays on a computer screen to review the results. No more waiting for x-rays to be developed. We can also share the images with you so you can see what we are explaining about your oral condition.

DIAGNOdent

DIAGNOdent is a powerful new laser technology used for early detection and diagnosis of tooth decay. DIAGNOdent helps locate decay that is very small or hidden in the cracks and crevices of teeth. This allows us to treat the decay when it is small, requiring less removal of the tooth structure. This allows the tooth to maintain its strength, and be less likely to crack or break easily in the future. Early decay detection means an easier and less costly treatment for you.

Intra-Oral Camera

The intraoral camera takes pictures of the outside tooth structure, gums, cheeks and tongue with a small pen size camera. The images from the intraoral camera can be viewed immediately on a computer or television monitor. You can see exactly what the doctors are seeing for yourself. Since the images are magnified we are able to detect problems such as cracks or decay when they are very small and easy to treat. Can’t view the movie?

KaVo Soft Tissue Laser

The soft tissue laser allows us to provide delicate, precise treatment without damaging healthy tissue. Treatments completed with the soft tissue laser are generally painless and do not require the use of incisions or stitches. As the laser is removing diseased tissue it also disinfects the area, which greatly reduces the chance of infection. Best of all, healing time is greatly reduced as compared to treatments done with a scalpel. With the soft tissue laser we are able to painlessly treat gum disease and cold sores. The laser is also excellent for gum reshaping and contouring to improve the look of your smile.

Versa Wave Hard Tissue Laser

The hard tissue laser allows us to remove decay from a tooth and prep the tooth for a restoration without the use of a drill. The hard tissue laser quietly and painlessly removes only the diseased tooth structure the doctor wishes to remove while preserving healthy tooth structure. Hard tissue laser treatment can also be used to desensitize patients who are experiencing cold sensitivity. Can’t view the movie?

Radiosurgery

Radiosurgery is an exciting new technology that allows us to treat gum issues safely and comfortably with the use of radio waves rather then a scalpel. It allows us to perform gum treatment that is bloodless, and requires no stitches. This allows our patients to experience a much faster, easy recovery. Gum tissue helps protect teeth, but excessive gum tissue can be removed without reducing this protection. Gum tissue contouring is especially helpful to accident patients who have damaged gums.

VELscope Oral Cancer Screening

The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that over 350,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year. The mortality rate of oral cancer has not changed in over thirty years in part to the fact that it is not diagnosed early enough.

With the VELscope oral cancer screening system, our doctors and hygienist can detect suspect areas before they are visible to the naked eye. Oral cancer appears as white, red, or white and red patches. However, when these patches are seen by the naked it typically means the cancer is already in an advanced stage. VELscope allows us to detect possible oral cancer at its earliest stage, when oral cancer is still often curable.

The system uses a powerful blue light to increase our ability to see lesions, cancerous, and precancerous cells typically invisible to the naked eye. The light allows us to distinguish between normal and abnormal cells with a higher rate of accuracy. The results are documented using pictures and can be stored digitally. VELscope also allows for better removal of all diseased tissue.

Screening is completed in a minute or two using a small hand-held device, it is a very non-invasive procedure that can save your life.

Cavitron

In the past the only way to remove tarter from above and below the gum line was by scraping. With the Cavitron Ultrasonic Cleaner our hygienist are able to gently, and comfortably remove tarter with high frequency sound waves. The Cavitron Utrasonic cleaner is a safe, effective and painless alternative to traditional cleaning methods. The Cavitron vibrates at the speed of sound so you can hardly feel any movement making even a deep cleaning a more pleasant experience. Can’t view the movie?

Panorex Imaging

Similar to the medical CT scan. Panorex Imaging takes three-dimensional images of your tooth and surrounding oral structures. The clear, sharp images allow us to clearly see the tooth and its root structure as well as the jawbone, nerves and soft tissue. Since we are able to see the internal structures we are able to detect, diagnosis and treat issues while they are small, before they cause significant damage. The Panorex also allows us to monitor any possible issues and make informed decisions about when, and if any treatment is needed.

Spectra

Spectra™ is the latest advancement in cavity detection available to the dental community. Spectra™ is a small hand-held device that emits a high energy, violet-blue light. When projected on the tooth surface the light waves causes healthy tooth enamel to fluoresce green and compromised enamel to fluoresce red. This technology allows Dr. Christy and Dr. Balsis to detect decay at a very early stage, before it is visible to the naked eye, and before it has a chance to cause significant tooth damage.

Spectra’s™ advanced technology allows the doctors to take still photos of what they are seeing. These photos can be shared with the patient so they are also able to see any areas of concern. The photos can also be saved to patient’s electronic files and used for treatment management, and treatment progress reports.

During treatment, Dr. Christy and Dr. Balsis use Sprectra™ to determine that all diseased enamel is removed before placing a filling or restoration. This means a healthier, improved outcome for our patients.
